Proton probing of laser-driven EM pulses travelling in helical coils

چکیده
The ultrafast charge dynamics following the interaction of an ultra-intense laser pulse with a foil target leads to the launch of an ultra-short, intense electromagnetic (EM) pulse along a wire connected to the target. Due to the strong electric field (of the order of GV m−1) associated to such laser-driven EM pulses, these can be exploited in a travelling-wave helical geometry for controlling and optimizing the parameters of laser accelerated proton beams. The propagation of the EM pulse along a helical path was studied by employing a proton probing technique. The pulse-carrying coil was probed along two orthogonal directions, transverse and parallel to the coil axis. The temporal profile of the pulse obtained from the transverse probing of the coil is in agreement with the previous measurements obtained in a planar geometry. The data obtained from the longitudinal probing of the coil shows a clear evidence of an energy dependent reduction of the proton beam divergence, which underpins the mechanism behind selective guiding of laser-driven ions by the helical coil

Nowadays, due to the high costs and large dimensions of the conventional proton accelerators, other optimal methods for producing the proton beam have been studied. Using of Laser-driven proton accelerators is one of the important and new methods. In laser-driven ion acceleration, a highly ultra-intense laser pulse interacts with solid density targets and will create a plasma media that will ac...

Ultra-short proton pulses originating from laser-plasma accelerators can provide instantaneous dose rates at least 10(7)-fold in excess of conventional, continuous proton beams. The impact of such extremely high proton dose rates on A549 human lung cancer cells was compared with conventionally accelerated protons and 90 keV X-rays. Between 0.2 and 2 Gy, the yield of DNA double strand breaks (fo...

A scheme has been developed permitting the spatial and temporal characterisation of ultrafast dynamics induced by laser driven proton bursts in transparent dielectrics. Advantage is taken of the high degree of synchronicity between the proton bursts generated during laser-foil target interactions and the probing laser to provide the basis for streaking of the dynamics. Relaxation times of elect...

CO2 laser-driven ion acceleration has been used to generate monoenergetic, MeV proton beams from a gas jet plasma. Use of a gas jet is advantageous because it offers interactions at a density around the critical plasma density for 10 μm pulses (10 cm) and can be run at a repetition rate of 1-100 Hz. This opens the possibility to create a variable species ion source easily switchable from proton...
